Fred Box 2m AM Transceiver Kit
Introduction
6th May - Tom (G4BYE) orders the first (!) batch of crystals from Quartz Lab, and starts to prepare the PCB etc.
Onwards - Tom produces the first batch of PCBs, completes two Fred Boxes! and posts details on VHF AM Group to a very enthusiastic reception. Fantastic!
7th December! - I finally start my Fred Box kit. First the resistors..
8th/9th December - Remaining resistors, 18 caps and Xtal. Aided by a glass of Chardonnay.
14th December - Remaining transistors and caps installed. Next the coils!
26th December - Wound and installed the coils. Well actually unwound the existing wire, to leave the turns required. The wire was extremely thin, so this required some care! It would have been easier to rewind them.
30th December - Installed the few remaining parts. Checked things through with G4BYE, one transistor was dead(!) and one coil was missing a turn. Then we fired up the Fred Box, and with very little tweaking, the TX and RX worked great! Discussed an enhancement to enable "netting" of the RX with the TX. All aided by a Tiger Beer
